: L'articolo è una piccola parola che sta davanti al nome. Dice a chi ascolta se intendi qualcosa di già noto oppure qualcosa di nuovo e non precisato. L'inglese ne ha tre — a, an, the — e una quarta possibilità altrettanto reale: nessun articolo.

: L'articolo determinativo the indica una cosa precisa che sia chi parla sia chi ascolta sanno identificare. Non cambia mai: la stessa parola per singolare e plurale, per nomi numerabili e non numerabili.

: L'articolo indeterminativo a / an introduce una cosa numerabile nominata per la prima volta, o una che non conta quale sia. Esiste solo al singolare, e la scelta fra a e an dipende dal suono che segue, non dalla lettera.

Golden rule

Non guardare la parola: ascoltala. Decide il suono dopo l'articolo. Per questo an hour vuole an — la h è muta — mentre a university vuole a, perché comincia con un suono «iu». Leggi ogni parola nuova ad alta voce una volta, e l'orecchio sceglierà per te.

Molto spesso la risposta giusta è nessun articolo. È una vera scelta grammaticale, non una dimenticanza: plurali generici, non numerabili generici, i pasti, by + mezzo di trasporto, le lingue e quasi tutti i paesi vogliono l'articolo zero.
