: Un verbo modale non cambia mai. Nessuna -s alla terza persona, nessun to dopo di lui, nessun do per fare domanda o negazione. He can swim, she must go, they should wait — la stessa parola per tutti, e il verbo dopo è sempre nudo.

Golden rule

Un modale è un verbo che ha rinunciato alle desinenze in cambio di un mestiere. Non si coniuga, non prende to, non prende in prestito do — ma sa trasformare un fatto qualunque in un permesso, un obbligo o un consiglio. Se ti accorgi di aggiungere qualcosa dopo un modale, quasi certamente stai aggiungendo un errore.

mustn't non è il negativo di must. must dice che devi, mustn't dice che ti è vietato — sono entrambi forti e spingono nella stessa direzione. Il vero negativo di must, quello che significa «non è necessario», è don't have to. You mustn't smoke here e You don't have to smoke here sono due frasi completamente diverse.
