: Un phrasal verb è un verbo più una parolina che ne cambia il significato: look vuol dire una cosa, look after un'altra, look for un'altra ancora. Le due parole si comportano come una sola, e il senso della coppia raramente è la somma delle sue parti.

: Un phrasal verb separabile lascia che l'oggetto stia dopo la particella o in mezzo alle due parole: turn on the light oppure turn the light on. Sono corretti entrambi, e sentirai entrambi.

: È l'unica regola senza eccezioni: se l'oggetto è un pronome — it, them, him, her — DEVE andare in mezzo. turn it on, mai turn on it. Un nome può stare da entrambe le parti, un pronome ha un posto solo.

Golden rule

Impara la particella, non solo la coppia. up spesso significa portare a termine, out significa fuori o fino in fondo, off significa staccare, back significa tornare. La particella non ti darà il significato esatto, ma toglierà alla faccenda l'aria di casualità — e rende un phrasal verb nuovo indovinabile invece che opaco.

I phrasal verb sono il registro di tutti i giorni. Parlando si dice put off, in un rapporto formale si scrive postpone. Sono entrambi inglese corretto, ma scegliere la parola formale in una conversazione suona rigido, e il phrasal verb in un contratto suona sciatto. Imparali entrambi e scegli in base alla situazione.
