⑱ If I wereN. 18 · If I were

The second conditional and wishes

A past tense used to talk about now — because the past here means distance from reality, not time.

First page · real or unreal

The two conditionals

1
Is it something that may really happen?
sì → first conditional · if + present, will
no → keep going down
2
Is it imaginary, or contrary to the facts right now?
sì → second conditional · if + past, would
no → keep going down
3
Is it advice you are giving from the other person's position?
sì → If I were you, I would…
no → keep going down
4
Are you regretting how things are, without any condition?
sì → I wish + past
no → keep going down
5
Are you saying something should have happened by now?
sì → It's time + past
no → you are probably describing a fact: use the present

: Il secondo condizionale immagina qualcosa che adesso non è vero, o è molto improbabile: If I had more time, I would learn the piano.

Porta un piccolo rimpianto, e non prende mai would per le tue stesse azioni — I wish I could è giusto, I wish I would no.

Golden rule
Nel secondo condizionale be diventa were per ogni persona: If I were you, if he were here. was si sente parlando e lì non è sbagliato, ma were è la forma standard e l'unica da scrivere — e nella formula fissa If I were you è l'unica possibile.
