«Il caffè, l'Italia, il lunedì»: the seven forms and uses of the article
A single word, seven forms and the sound that chooses them — plus the real secret: WHEN the article is needed and when not.
The heart of the sheet
Everything in one table
: The definite article points to a specific, known thing (the in English). It changes with gender (masculine/feminine), number (singular/plural) and — here's the Italian trick — with the first sound of the word that follows. Polish has no articles: this is the newest thing to learn.
| Condition | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| maschile sing. + consonante | il | il treno |
| maschile sing. + s impura, z, gn, pn, ps, x, y | lo | lo zaino · lo pneumatico |
| maschile sing. + vocale | l' | l'amico |
| femminile sing. + consonante | la | la cucina |
| femminile sing. + vocale | l' | l'amica |
Regola d'oro
Don't look at the word: listen to its first sound. That's what decides between il / lo / l'. And ALWAYS learn a noun together with its article: not «zaino», but «lo zaino».
| Genere · Numero | + consonante | + s impura, z, gn, pn, ps, x, y | + vocale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maschile sing. | il (il treno) | lo (lo zaino) | l' (l'amico) |
| Maschile plur. | i (i treni) | gli (gli zaini) | gli (gli amici) |
| Femminile sing. | la (la cucina) | la (la stazione) | l' (l'amica) |
| Femminile plur. | le (le cucine) | le (le stazioni) | le (le amiche) |
