② PartitiviN. 2 · Articoli partitivi

Partitive articles

del, dello, della, dei, degli, delle: di + article to say «un po' di» and «alcuni».

First page · what it is and what form it takes

The forms

: The partitive article is formed with the preposition di + the definite article (di + il = del, di + la = della...). It indicates an unspecified part of a larger whole: a certain quantity, «some / a bit of» in the singular and «some / a few» in the plural.

: In the singular the partitive indicates an indefinite quantity of something uncountable (water, bread, sugar). It means «some / a bit of»: «Vorrei del pane» means «I'd like some bread».

: In the plural the partitive indicates an unspecified number: it means «some» or «a few». It is also the plural of the indefinite article: un libro becomes dei libri, una mela becomes delle mele.
