First names and surnames
: With proper nouns (people's first names, surnames, geographic names) the definite article follows special rules: sometimes it is needed, sometimes not. On these pages we look case by case at when to use it and when to leave it out.

Before a first name the article is usually NOT used.

In the spoken language of some areas of Northern Italy you hear the article before a first name.

Cognome (uomo)
With a man's surname, as a rule, no article.
Ho incontrato RossiChiedi a Bianchi
Cognome (donna)
With a woman's surname, the article is often used (but not if the first name is also present).
La Ferrari è bravama: Giulia Ferrari è brava
Titolo + cognome
With a title followed by the surname, when you are talking about that person, the article is used.

Famiglia
With the surname of a whole family (in the plural) the article is used.

Storia
With famous historical figures, by tradition, the article is often used.
Il Manzoniil Petrarcail Caravaggio
When you SPEAK TO the person using the title, the article disappears: «Buongiorno, dottor Bianchi!». When you SPEAK ABOUT her or him, the article returns: «Il dottor Bianchi è arrivato».
