Forms and uses

: The past conditional is the conditional of times already gone by. It indicates above all an action that could have happened but did not, and serves to express regret, reproach or a missed possibility.

Come si forma

It is formed with the present conditional of the auxiliary (avere or essere) + the past participle: avrei mangiato, sarei andato. The choice of auxiliary and the agreement of the participle follow the rules of the passato prossimo.

Rimpianto e rimprovero

It is used to express a regret or a reproach (Avrei dovuto studiare di più; Avresti potuto avvisarmi) and for something that could not be done (Sarei venuto volentieri, ma ero malato).

Avrei dovuto...Avresti potuto...Sarei venuto, ma...

Note: in Italian the «future in the past» is expressed with the past conditional, not with the present as in other languages. «Ha detto che sarebbe venuto» (= he promised: I will come). Many foreigners make the mistake of using the present conditional («sarebbe»): it is wrong.
