«Penso che tu abbia ragione»: the subjunctive in dependent clauses
Not how it is formed, but WHEN it is used: the verbs that govern it (opinion, will, doubt, emotion), the conjunctions that require it and the basic sequence of tenses.

When the main clause requires the subjunctive
: This card doesn't teach you how to form the subjunctive (see the dedicated card for the forms): it teaches you WHEN to use it. The subjunctive almost always lives in the subordinate clause, after «che». You don't pick it at random: the main clause calls for it. If the main clause expresses subjectivity — an opinion, a wish, a doubt, an emotion — then the subordinate clause takes the subjunctive. If it expresses certainty, the indicative stays.

Regola d'oro
Always look at the verb of the MAIN clause, not the subordinate one. That's what decides. Subjectivity (opinion, will, doubt, emotion, judgment) → subjunctive. Certainty and statement of fact (so, vedo, è vero, è ovvio) → indicative. The subjunctive isn't «more elegant»: it's the grammatical consequence of what you say in the main clause.
Serve un secondo soggetto
The subjunctive with «che» appears when the two verbs have DIFFERENT subjects: «(io) penso che (tu) abbia ragione». If the subject is the same, you don't use «che + congiuntivo» but «di + infinito»: «Penso di avere ragione», «Spero di arrivare in tempo». It's the number-one mistake: keep an eye on it.
