The forms

: The imperfect subjunctive is formed from the verb stem plus the endings -assi (verbs in -are), -essi (in -ere), -issi (in -ire): che io parlassi, che io prendessi, che io dormissi. The endings are the same for all three conjugations except for the initial vowel (a/e/i).

Gli irregolari

The most important irregulars: essere → fossi, fare → facessi, dire → dicessi, dare → dessi, stare → stessi, bere → bevessi. Note that many «irregulars» actually follow the Latin infinitive stem (fare→facessi, dire→dicessi), the same one as the imperfect indicative.
