Near and far

: Demonstrative adjectives are used to point out a person or thing, showing whether it is near or far from the speaker. The two main ones are questo (near) and quello (far).

questo (vicino)

Questo points to something near the speaker, in space or in time. It has four regular forms: questo, questa, questi, queste.

quello (lontano)

Quello points to something far from the speaker. Its forms change like the definite article, according to gender, number and the first sound of the word that follows.

After questo and quello the article is NEVER used: you say questo libro (not «questo il libro») and quella casa (not «quella la casa»).

Anche pronomi

Questo and quello can also be pronouns, i.e. stand alone in place of the noun: «Quale vuoi? Questo.» «Preferisco quello.»
