Adjectives and comparison

They never change form — but their place is fixed, and the comparative depends on how long the word is.

The two roads

Short adjectives · add -er and -est

One syllable, or two ending in -y. The word itself changes.
  • old → older → the oldest
  • big → bigger → the biggest
  • happy → happier → the happiest
  • easy → easier → the easiest

Long adjectives · put more and most in front

Two syllables or more. The word stays exactly as it is.
  • modern → more modern → the most modern
  • expensive → more expensive → the most expensive
  • difficult → more difficult → the most difficult
  • beautiful → more beautiful → the most beautiful

: Un aggettivo descrive un nome, e in inglese non cambia mai: one red car, two red cars, a red house. Non c'è genere e non c'è plurale di cui preoccuparsi. È uno dei punti in cui l'inglese chiede meno di quasi qualunque altra lingua.

: Il comparativo mette due cose una accanto all'altra, ed è seguito da than: cheaper than, more useful than. La scelta fra -er e more la decide la lunghezza della parola, non il significato — conta le sillabe e hai la risposta.

: Il superlativo ne sceglie uno fra tutti gli altri, e vuole sempre the davanti: the cheapest, the most useful. Dimenticare the è uno degli errori più comuni a questo livello, perché quella parolina sembra facoltativa e non lo è.

Golden rule
Conta le sillabe, non tradurre il significato. Una sillaba vuole -er. Tre o più vogliono more. Le due sillabe sono l'unica zona grigia, e anche lì la regola è semplice: se finisce in -y prende -er, altrimenti more. E qualunque cosa costruisci, il superlativo si tiene il suo the.
Non costruire mai il grado due volte. more bigger e the most easiest sono sbagliati: o cambia la parola, o le metti more davanti, mai tutt'e due. È l'errore più udibile di tutto il confronto.
