Past continuous and telling a story

One tense paints the background, the other drops the event into it.

The two past tenses

Past continuous · the background

Already going on. It sets the scene and has no clear beginning or end.

I was cooking dinner.
It was raining.
They were waiting outside.
She was living in Berlin that year.

Past simple · the event

A complete fact that lands inside the scene, or a chain of facts one after another.

The phone rang.
He arrived.
I dropped the plate.
She moved to Berlin in 2019.

: Il past continuous è was o were più il verbo con -ing. Dice che qualcosa era già in corso in un momento del passato — non che è cominciato allora, e non che è finito.

: Quando un fatto breve taglia dentro qualcosa di più lungo, il lungo va al continuous e il breve al simple: I was cooking when the phone rang. La parola when introduce il breve, while introduce il lungo.

: Quando due cose lunghe erano in corso insieme, entrambe vogliono il continuous, di solito unite da while: I was reading while she was cooking. Nessuna interrompe l'altra — semplicemente si sovrappongono.

Golden rule

Chiediti quale delle due era già in corso. Quella è lo sfondo e vuole il continuous; l'altra ci atterra dentro e vuole il simple. Se non c'era niente già in corso — se i fatti si susseguono e basta — resta tutto al simple, e il racconto avanza.

I verbi di stato restano al simple anche al passato: I knew, I wanted, I understood. I was knowing è sbagliato a ogni livello, esattamente come al presente — la regola non cambia quando cambia il tempo.
