Present simple

Always, every day, in general. The tense of habits and facts.

I work in a bank.
She drinks tea every morning.
Water boils at 100 degrees.
They don't live here.

Present continuous

Right now, or around now. The tense of what is going on while you speak.

I am working from home today.
She is drinking tea right now.
Look — the water is boiling!
They aren't living here at the moment.

: Il present continuous è fatto di due pezzi: il verbo be, che cambia con la persona, e il verbo principale con -ing, che non cambia mai. Dice che qualcosa è in corso in questo momento, o in questo periodo della tua vita.

: Il -ing si aggiunge al verbo nudo e resta uguale per ogni persona: I am working, he is working, they are working. Si muove solo be. Per questo il continuous è più facile di quanto sembri: la desinenza è una e non varia mai.

: Alcuni verbi descrivono uno stato e non un'azione: know, like, want, need, understand, believe, belong, hate. Uno stato non «accade», semplicemente è — quindi questi verbi restano al simple anche quando intendi proprio adesso.

Golden rule

Fatti una domanda sola: sta accadendo MENTRE parlo, oppure è quello che di solito accade? In corso adesso, anche per qualche settimana, vuole il continuous. Di solito, sempre, ogni giorno vuole il simple. La parola now è tua amica: se puoi aggiungerla e la frase regge ancora, ti serve il continuous.

I verbi di stato non prendono mai -ing, per quanto presente sia il momento. I am knowing, I am wanting e I am liking sono sbagliati a ogni livello, non solo all'A1 — si dice I know, I want, I like anche quando intendi adesso.
