Pronouns, possessives and there is

Few words, always the same — but the subject can never be left out, and the possessive follows the owner.

: Il soggetto compie l'azione e sta prima del verbo; l'oggetto la riceve e sta dopo. L'inglese ha un pronome diverso per ciascun ruolo — I see him, he sees me — e a dirti quale ti serve è la posizione stessa.

: Il possessivo dice chi possiede la cosa, e concorda con il PROPRIETARIO, mai con la cosa posseduta: his sister, her brother, their house. Non cambia per genere o numero di ciò che segue — my book e my books sono entrambi my.

: there is e there are annunciano che qualcosa esiste, o si trova da qualche parte. Quel there non è un luogo: è una parola vuota che tiene aperto il posto del soggetto, perché l'inglese si rifiuta di cominciare una frase senza soggetto.

Golden rule

A scegliere il pronome è la posizione, non il significato. Prima del verbo la forma soggetto, dopo il verbo o dopo una preposizione la forma oggetto. E qualunque cosa succeda, il posto del soggetto non resta mai vuoto: se non c'è nessuno da metterci, l'inglese ci mette it o there e tira dritto.

its e it's sono due parole diverse che suonano uguali. its significa «di esso» (the dog and its bone). it's è la contrazione di it is o it has (it's late). Il possessivo è quello SENZA apostrofo — il contrario di quello che ti aspetteresti, ed è l'errore scritto più comune dell'inglese.
