: Una domanda si fa spostando l'ausiliare davanti al soggetto. Non si muove nient'altro e non cambia nient'altro. Se la frase non ha un ausiliare suo, si chiama do apposta perché ci sia qualcosa da spostare.
: Quando la parola interrogativa È il soggetto — who, what, which — non c'è niente con cui scambiarla, quindi non compare nessun ausiliare: Who called you? What happened? La frase mantiene l'ordine di un'affermazione.
: Dentro una frase più lunga la domanda smette di essere domanda e torna all'ordine dell'affermazione: I don't know where she lives. Could you tell me what time it is. Nessuno scambio, nessun do, e nessun punto interrogativo a meno che a essere domanda sia l'intera frase.

Golden rule
Trova l'ausiliare e spostalo davanti al soggetto. Quell'unico movimento costruisce ogni domanda della lingua, in ogni tempo. Se un ausiliare non lo trovi, chiama do — e ricorda che una volta che do porta il tempo, il verbo principale torna alla forma nuda.
Una risposta breve ripete l'ausiliare, non il verbo: Do you work here? — Yes, I do. Have you finished? — No, I haven't. Ripetere il verbo principale (Yes, I work) è grammaticale ma suona straniero, ed è uno dei segni più chiari di chi sta imparando.
