: In inglese è la posizione di una parola a dirti che mestiere fa. The dog bit the man e The man bit the dog usano le stesse parole e significano cose opposte: a dire chi ha fatto cosa è solo l'ordine. Per questo l'ordine non si può cambiare liberamente — non è stile, è grammatica.
: Il soggetto è obbligatorio. Il polacco e l'italiano possono ometterlo perché la desinenza del verbo dice già chi parla; le desinenze inglesi non dicono quasi nulla, quindi il soggetto deve esserci — anche quando non c'è nessuno, come in It is raining o There is a problem.
: Per fare una domanda l'inglese non cambia l'intonazione e non aggiunge una particella interrogativa: scambia il soggetto e l'ausiliare. Are you ready? Have you finished? Did she call? Se un ausiliare non c'è, si chiama do apposta per poterlo scambiare.

Golden rule
L'inglese non sposta le parole per cambiare l'enfasi — cambia la costruzione. Dove una lingua a ordine libero dice le stesse parole in un altro ordine, l'inglese usa un'altra frase: It was Anna who called, not John. What I need is time. There is a man at the door. Impara queste forme e ti riprendi tutto quello che ti dava l'ordine libero.
Fra il verbo e il suo oggetto non va niente. È la regola che chi parla una lingua a ordine libero rompe più spesso, perché nella propria lingua un avverbio ci sta comodo. I like very much this book è sbagliata: l'avverbio va in fondo, I like this book very much.
