The two faces of the imperfect

: The imperfetto is the past tense that doesn't report a finished event — it PAINTS: how things were, what people used to do, what was happening. It's the tense of fairy tales («C'era una volta…»), childhood memories and descriptions. It doesn't tell you that something began or ended: it shows you the scene while it lasts.

Com'era — descrizione e stato

Descrivere persone, luoghi e cose nel passato; dire l'età, l'ora, il tempo atmosferico, gli stati d'animo. Risponde a «Com'era? Che ora era?».

Cosa facevi — abitudine e azione in corso

Raccontare azioni che si ripetevano (abitudini) o che erano in corso in un momento del passato. Risponde a «Cosa facevi di solito? Cosa stavi facendo?».

Ogni estate andavamo al mare
Da bambino giocavo a calcio
Mentre studiavo, ascoltavo musica
La domenica mangiavamo dai nonni

Regola d'oro

The imperfetto is a photograph in motion, not a point on the timeline. It doesn't say when the action begins or ends: it shows it while it lasts, repeats, or serves as background. If you can picture the scene as "in progress" (how it was, what usually happened), that's the imperfetto.

Le spie dell'imperfetto

Some words almost always call for the imperfetto: mentre, sempre, spesso, di solito, ogni giorno / ogni estate, da bambino / da piccolo, una volta, allora. They're not an absolute law (meaning always decides), but they're golden help when you have to choose.
