«Era una bella giornata quando è successo tutto»: imperfetto or passato prossimo?

Background or action?
: The imperfetto describes how things were in the past: the background, the habit, the duration. The passato prossimo reports a completed event, an action that happened and ended. First you'll learn to FORM the imperfetto (it's almost entirely regular: -avo, -evo, -ivo, with only four irregular verbs), then you'll learn to CHOOSE it against the passato prossimo.
Imperfetto — lo sfondo
Descrizione, abitudine, azione che dura o si ripete, età, ora e tempo, due azioni contemporanee.
- Da bambino giocavo a calcio ogni giorno
- Era una bella giornata, il sole splendeva

Passato prossimo — l'azione
Un fatto singolo, concluso, che fa avanzare la storia.
- Ieri ho giocato una partita

Regola d'oro
Together they work like this: the imperfetto paints the scene, the passato prossimo tells what happened. «Mentre dormivo (sfondo), il telefono ha squillato (azione)». The imperfetto lays out the carpet, the passato prossimo walks across it.

Le spie temporali
Some words are clues: mentre, sempre, ogni giorno, di solito, da bambino call for the imperfetto; all'improvviso, ieri, due volte, nel 2010, poi call for the passato prossimo. They're not an absolute law (meaning always decides), but in an exam they're golden help.
