The words for asking

: Interrogative words are used to ask questions in order to request specific information: a person, a thing, a place, a time, a manner, a quantity or a cause.

Due tipi di domande

In Italian there are two kinds of questions. Yes/no questions use the same words as the affirmative sentence, but with a rising intonation at the end: «Parli italiano?». Wh-questions begin with an interrogative word: «Dove abiti?».

Watch out for quale and quanto: they agree. Quale/quali changes only in the plural (quale libro? quali libri?); quanto/quanta/quanti/quante has four forms like an adjective (quanto pane? quanta acqua? quanti anni? quante ore?).

perché: domanda e risposta

Perché is used both to ask for the cause in the question («Perché piangi?») and to answer («Perché sono triste»). The same word works for the question and the answer.
