The particles NE and CI

Two little words that avoid repetition: NE (a quantity, «di» something) and CI (a place, «a» something).

What they are for

: Ne and ci are two very common particles in Italian. They help you not repeat something already said: they replace a piece of the sentence and make it lighter and more natural.

Ne mainly replaces a quantity (partitive use): «Quante mele vuoi? Ne voglio tre» (ne = of apples). Ne also replaces a group introduced by di: «Parli del problema? Sì, ne parlo» (ne = of the problem).

Ci mainly replaces a place introduced by a, in or su: «Vai a Roma? Sì, ci vado» (ci = to Rome). Ci also replaces an element introduced by a with certain verbs (pensare a, credere a): «Pensi all'esame? Sì, ci penso» (ci = about the exam).

Watch the agreement: in compound tenses, the past participle agrees with the quantity expressed by ne. «Quante pizze hai mangiato? Ne ho mangiate due» (mangiate, feminine plural, like pizze).

Altri «ci»

Don't confuse: ci is also the pronoun for us (ci vediamo = we see each other) and sometimes simply means «there». The context always makes clear which ci it is.
