Two pieces: auxiliary (avere or essere) + past participle — with irregulars, agreement and markers.

The heart of the tense

Auxiliary + participle (and who takes essere)

: It describes a finished action, usually recent and with a result. It is formed with two pieces: the auxiliary (essere or avere) in the PRESENT tense + the past participle of the verb. The auxiliary carries the person (who and when), the participle carries the meaning. It is the past tense you use every day to say what you did yesterday, over the weekend, on holiday.

Regola d'oro

With AVERE the participle stays fixed and ends in −o: ho mangiato, Anna ha mangiato, loro hanno mangiato. With ESSERE the participle AGREES with the subject like an adjective: −o/−a/−i/−e. Marco è andato, Anna è andata, i ragazzi sono andati, le ragazze sono andate.

ESSERE is used by verbs of MOVEMENT and change of state (andare, venire, partire, uscire, entrare, tornare, arrivare, restare, nascere, morire, diventare) plus essere and stare, and ALL reflexive verbs: mi sono lavato, si è divertita. With essere remember the ending: −o/−a/−i/−e. All the others (and almost all verbs with an object) use avere.
