㉔ PresenteN. 24 · L'indicativo presente

The present indicative

Three conjugations, the irregulars you use every day, piacere and c'è/ci sono.

The heart of the verb

Three conjugations + the useful irregulars

: The present tense says what happens now or usually. The verb changes its ending according to the person: the ending does the talking, so no pronoun is needed. One single Italian present covers both "I speak" and "I am speaking".

−are (parlare)−ere (prendere)−ire (dormire)

Regola d'oro
Remove −are/−ere/−ire and add the personal ending. The stem stays the same — only the tail changes. And remember: io −o, tu −i, noi −iamo are identical across all three conjugations.
Verbi in −ire con −isc−
Many −ire verbs insert −isc− between the stem and the ending, but only in io/tu/lui/loro, never in noi/voi: capisco, capisci, capisce, capiamo, capite, capiscono. The same goes for finire (finisco) and preferire (preferisco).
FormNote

dire → dico, dici, dice, diciamo, dite, diconosembra −ire ma NON prende −isc−: radice nascosta dic−; voi = dite

Ricettivo: «sto mangiando»
To stress that the action is happening RIGHT now, Italian uses stare (present) + gerund: sto mangiando, stai facendo, sta leggendo. That's the gerund: −are → −ando, −ere/−ire → −endo. At this level you only need to RECOGNIZE it: «mangio» works perfectly well too. Everything about the gerund is in another sheet.
