The forms and use
: The subject personal pronoun indicates who performs the action of the verb (io, tu, lui, lei, noi, voi, loro). It is used in place of the noun, so as not to repeat it.

|---|---|---|
| Persona | Singolare | Plurale |
| 1ª | io | noi |
| 2ª | tu | voi |
| 3ª maschile | lui | loro |
| 3ª femminile | lei | loro |
| cortesia | Lei (uomo o donna) | Loro (raro, molto formale) |
Regola d'oro: il soggetto sottinteso
In Italian the subject pronoun is usually NOT expressed, because the verb ending already says who performs the action: «parlo» already means «I speak». It is used only to give emphasis or to make a contrast: «Io lavoro, tu dormi».
Lei (capitalised) is the courtesy pronoun: it is used to address someone formally («Lei») whom you do not know well or to whom you show respect, both men and women. It takes the verb in the third person singular: «Lei come sta?».
Pronomi tonici
After a preposition io and tu are not used, but the stressed forms me and te: con me, per te, da lui, senza di noi. The other persons (lui, lei, noi, voi, loro) stay the same.
