The past of the past

: The trapassato prossimo (pluperfect) indicates a past action that happened before another action that is also past. It is the «past of the past»: it serves to put two bygone moments in order.

Come si forma

It is formed like the passato prossimo, but with the auxiliary (avere or essere) in the imperfect: avevo mangiato, ero andato. The choice of auxiliary and the agreement of the participle follow the same rules as the passato prossimo.

The pluperfect is used for the action that happened FIRST, and the passato prossimo (or imperfect, or passato remoto) for the action that happened LATER: «Quando sono arrivato, il treno era già partito» (first the train left, then I arrived).

Often, next to the pluperfect there are words that underline the earlier time: già, prima, appena, non... ancora. «Avevo già finito quando mi hai chiamato».
