㉕ RiflessiviN. 25 · I verbi riflessivi

Reflexive verbs

The pronoun that changes with the person, the reciprocals and the past with essere + agreement.

Verbs · mi, ti, si, ci, vi, si

The action returns to the subject

: In a reflexive verb the action comes back to the subject: whoever does the action also receives it. "Io lavo la macchina" → the object is the car; "Io mi lavo" → I wash myself. You need two things: the reflexive pronoun (mi, ti, si, ci, vi, si), which changes with the person, and — in the infinitive — the ending -si: lavarsi, alzarsi, chiamarsi.

Verbo normale

L'azione va su un'altra cosa o persona.
  • Lavo la macchina
  • Sveglio i bambini
  • Chiamo Marco

Verbo riflessivo

L'azione torna sul soggetto: aggiungi il pronome (mi, ti, si…).
  • Mi lavo
  • Mi sveglio alle sette
  • Mi chiamo Marco
Regola d'oro
Reflexive = reflexive pronoun + verb, in the same person: mi, ti, si, ci, vi, si. The pronoun goes before the conjugated verb: "Ci alziamo presto". Careful: "si" is ONLY for the 3rd person (lui/lei, loro); the others have their own pronoun.

Lo sapevi? · Il passato con ESSERE
In the passato prossimo, reflexive verbs ALWAYS take essere (never avere), and the past participle agrees with the subject: "Mi sono alzato" (m.), "Mi sono alzata" (f.), "Ci siamo alzati" (we), "Si sono alzate" (they, f.). The pronoun stays in front: mi/ti/si + sono/sei/è… + participle.
